Go-bags: your strategy for survival

February 12, 2018

As wildfire approaches your home or an earthquake shakes it up, our rapidly beating hearts and worried brains go into overdrive:  "What do I do NOW?  What should I take with me when I leave?  Clothes, medicines, sanitary supplies, food, water, what?"  Well, with a little advance thinking, you could save yourself and your family a LOT of anxiety and fear.  Other folks have been thinking about what essentials to take in a go-bag for a long time and one company has ready-made solutions that you can customize for your particular family's needs:  https://earthquakebag.me/blogs/the-earthquake-blog

They have ready-made bags for a single person or a family of five.

Bags for your pets, too,  like this one for dogs:

Stow these ready-made "go bags" in your car - one for each person or pet - and you will be much better able to face the effects of disaster.  Plus you will avoid the heart-attack inducing anxiety of having to pull together life-critical supplies in the approach of a wildfire or horrendous mudslide.

Please consider this kit as a starting point in your personal emergency preparedness. I would add these items:

Personal medications/sanitation supplies in Ziplock

3 pairs undies & socks in Ziplock

Compressed small roll of toilet paper

Small bottle hand sanitizer + toothpaste & brush

Leatherman multi-tool, $24.95 from Amazon (1,000 uses!) : https://www.amazon.com/Leatherman-Style-Multi-Tool-Stainless-Steel/dp/B0032XVNMQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1485883682&sr=1-2&keywords=leatherman

Releasable plastic cable ties $14.97 from Amazon (1,000 uses!) https://www.amazon.com/USA-Strong-Cable-RELEASABLE-RE-USABLE/dp/B01IQHEU3G/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1485883907&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=zipties+re-usable More than you need so buy and share

My favorite “DUCK TAPE” $11.83 ($5.92 / Piece, 1,000 uses!) https://www.amazon.com/Gorilla-6001203-2-Duct-Tape-Black/dp/B00N150YS4/ref=sr_1_6?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1485884471&sr=1-6&keywords=gorilla+tape it’s a 2-pack so share with a friend.

LED headlamp $7.99! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005FEGYJC/ref=psdc_3180291_t1_B00PV0K8OM Cheap, hands-free, stays in place with over-the-top noggin strap. Get quality spare AAA batteries.

If you plan to keep the bag in your car, add extra water. Large bottles are much cheaper!

Knit Beanie hat – hypothermia begins at the top:

Hanging in your car? Fill gas tank before it is ½ empty EVERY TIME.

Keep some snacks like energy bars (and don’t eat them unless it’s an emergency J)

Buy a quality set of jumper cables and learn how to use them. They cannot be too long, FYI Amazon Prime EPAuto 4 Gauge x 20 Ft 500A Heavy Duty Booster Jumper Cables with Travel Bag and Safety Gloves (4 AWG x 20 Feet) $18.87 cheap! Plus they have instructions. https://www.amazon.com/EPAuto-Booster-Jumper-Cables-Travel/dp/B01AXBB2VG/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1485885760&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=jumper+cables&psc=1
